Strategic Planning & Goals: The first step is to identify the key company goals which will be the over_arching direction of the plan. These goals should be focused on three areas: financial, growth initiatives and alignment to the company's vision/mission. This provides the overall direction of the company by establishing high_level goals that will be achieved by tactical initiatives. The overall plan should be 1 to 3 years with measurement mileposts monthly, quarterly and annually. While the plan is put in place at the onset of the year, it should be constantly re_forecast with actual results throughout the year.
Do not try to write your business plan in one sitting. As I mentioned in the beginning, for a traditional brick and mortar business, it could take in excess of 100 hours to compile all of the information needed into a comprehensive but yet understandable document. For online businesses, probably not that long. But your final product should be well thought out, well documented and easily understandable.
Business Plan Analytics Through Key Performance Indicators (KPI's): Identifying key performance indicators for your business to use as benchmarks throughout the year is perhaps the most critical step you can make with regard to business analytics. Not only will KPI's help identify key shortfalls in the plan, but will help narrow your focus in addressing the shortfalls. For instance, recognizing that you have an issue in labor isn't merely enough when you consider the following possibilities: a) labor rates may be too high; b) overtime has exceeded its budget; c) the issue is regionally_based, not across the board; d) man hours may have exceeded its allocated budget, etc. It could be a myriad of triggers that caused labor to exceed its budget and KPI's enable you to drill down to the cause. KPI management requires a disciplined review process established monthly that fosters a blended analysis throughout the year that compares actual results against both budgets and forecasts.
There is quite a bit of calculations and you should know a little about business principles but it isn't that complicated. So first let's look at figuring out your future needed sales with this formula: Projected sales = fixed expenses divided by Ƒ_(var exp % of existing sales + mat cost % of existing sales + lab cost % of existing sales + desired net prof %)) So, let's say you existing sales is 迲ꯠ annually, your fixed expenses are 足ꯠ, variable expenses is ็ꯠ or 6Ǒ% of the 迲ꯠ, material cost is 趌ꯠ or 27ǔ%, labor cost is 贍ꯠ or 12ǔ%, and your existing profit margin is 赏ꯠ or 20ǒ%. Now let's say next year you want to have a profit margin of 25% so what would your sales need to be to give you that profit margin? Now you might think you would simply tack on 4ǐ% more to sales ྐྵ% _ 20ǒ%) and you would have it. Well not quiet. it doesn't work that way because you are going to have the additional variable expenses, material cost, and labor cost too. Remember, the more sales the more each of these expenses and cost will be.
